This is the tenth edition of “Best British Short Stories” but I must confess that I have not read any of the previous 9 volumes. It is compiled by Nicholas Royle, who opens the book with an introduction that provides an overview of the world of UK short stories. This introduction is a great resource for anyone inspired by this collection to read more as it points to many other opportunities to read short stories. CARDINALS APPEAR WHEN ANGELS ARE NEAR SHIRT
As with most collections, there are some stories that work well and others that don’t. As with most collections, the ones that don’t work for me will be the ones that work best for other readers. This is both the beauty and the falling point of the collection of short stories.
I like the more original stories best, such as “Nudibranch” and “Greetings from the Fat Man in a Postcard,” although I’ve read Etchell’s “Maxine,” part of his book Endland. and it’s not too much for my taste. Other stories are a mixed bag. Some of them feel like complete stories but others feel like episodes of longer stories. For me, “Whale Watching” is a moving story in the collection.
