First off, I was quite excited to read this because I do say I’m a Novik fan. I love both Uprooted and Spinning Silver dearly, and while I did LIKE this book, it also IMMENSELY disappointed me.
The book follows Galadriel (known as El) who is a 16 year old half Welsh, half Indian girl inside a (high) school for magic users called the Scholomance. Pretty much the school is filled with mana monsters that frequently kill the students at any given opportunity, so much so that constant vigilance is required and death is normal, and it’s really bad but the students don’t have any better options because the outside world is just as/more dangerous. There are no teachers. All lessons are done via various kinds of magic. There are different studies you can focus on. The school itself and the studies and the magic system are all very intricate and detailed and well thought out. The school whittles down the students as they go through their four years, and then the remaining seniors have to pass through the graduation hall which is filled with even deadlier monsters and most tend to die but the ones who get out are weathered and seasoned magic users who can take care of themselves!
