If you like the ‘I’m a bad guy (but I’m not)’ type of protagonist, you’ll most likely enjoy A Deadly Education. Perhaps I estimated this novel with false expectations. The premise makes it seem like a fantasy story encountering dark academic stuff but in reality, what we get is closer to The Hunger Game in Rick Riordan’s way. Eat Sleep Rave Repeat shirt
A very silly Deadly Education. That might have worked if it hadn’t been written. El’s narrative is bogged down by presentation and many times the action is interrupted by information dumping. For example, El will be about to fight some creature or she is chatting with something, and then we get El’s pages and pages explaining everything to us. I understand that the author wants to give a setting to certain scenes but personally I have never been interested in stories that are heavily ‘telling’ and light on the show. It doesn’t help that I see El as a less interesting version of Meda from Cracked.
