before I start this post I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge the controversy that was surrounding this as far as the main character’s representation goes of her being white and half Indian heritage, I cannot properly comment on the representation that was set forward in this. there were a few times while reading that I was like “maybe that could’ve been done better” but it was not my place and I do encourage everyone that wants to read this to look to ownvoices reviewers as well as do your research before going into it. With that being said, I do believe that Naomi Novik did plenty of research while writing this, but there are just some nuances that white authors cannot hit because they don’t experience the same things that other marginalized groups and people of color experience so that will show within the writing.
