If you’ve paid even a little attention to the news, you’ve probably read excerpts from Fear, the juiciest bits. Fear doesn’t reveal anything new about Donald Trump, an inept shady real estate mogul who seems to lack any attention span, lacking in empathy, void of the ability to grasp any multifaceted problem, ability to focus, demonstrate comprehension, or anything that’d indicate he’s mentally able to function as president effectively.
The big reveals are all from his underlings, hiding, stalling, and taking advantage of Donald Trump’s worst character flaws (of which there are many), and how close Donald Trump came to making a catastrophic error with North Korea. There are a few moments that are bleakly funny such as John Kelly’s “He’s an idiot. It’s pointless to try to convince him of anything. He’s gone off the rails. We’re in Crazytown. I don’t even know why any of us are here. This is the worst job I’ve ever had.” or discussions to suggesting that the best way to present Trump information on charts with bright colors.

Woodward plays it extremely close to the hip, (avoiding waxing philosophical about the players or the direct insults Michael Wolff’s Fire and Fury) but also occasionally veers into strange territory asserting that loner Steve Bannon was far more a bridge-builder than Jarod or Ivanka without any real evidence to support such an attack. Tonally, the cool journalistic style of Woodward also doesn’t seem to quite capture the insane, dysfunctional state of the white house, and soft pedals on Trump and the issue of race. Perhaps, Woodward’s conservative approach is to avoid the salacious but occasionally feels like the landed punches are being held back.
In the end, this is yet another document that should make any reader very uncomfortable that the man who’s charged as the state head of our country spends most waking hours watching cable news, golfing and rage tweeting…. but you already knew that before you considered this book.
The book closes a zinger but as the play still unfolds daily, there’s no conclusion. Is Mueller on a fishing expedition? Is it true there’s no real Russian collusion? Will Trump inevitably purger himself since he’s a “god damn dumbbell” if put on a stand? It feels like a draft for dark comedy that ends on a poorly constructed cliffhanger.
