That aside, what did I think? I really love the main character and her emotional journey. El is a prickly outsider who has never really had friends (possibly due to a prophecy that she will be evil and destructive?) and has developed walls a mile high to protect herself from the assumptions people make about her. She’s such an interesting character because it becomes clear that despite her brash rudeness and pushing people away, she’s actually sensitive and cares deeply for the people she loves. And maybe she hates that about herself and tries to pretend it isn’t true, but seeing her journey of eventually opening up to others and finding space to really be herself, even in a brutal magic school is really beautiful.
