I think at points this book is a little over the top, but O’Neill does a good job depicting the bond that he had with his dad growing up, and how that bond continued through his baseball career. There are areas though where the book loses some credibility. I mean you talk about the Orioles/Yankees playoff series and don’t even mention the Jeffrey Maeir play? Really? And then the Piazza/Clemens incident is never mentioned either. I don’t have as much of a problem with him speaking highly of Clemens in the book from the angle of a friend, teammate, and locker room neighbor, but shouldn’t you at least include a paragraph on that? I did enjoy the stuff with Zimmer’s quips, and how he realized his tantrums might affect his kids. O’Neill was one of my favorites, and you can never question his heart when he stepped on the field was turned on to this book by a guy who grew up down the street from the O’Neills. He knew I was a big Yankees fan and thought I would like it. He was right. It is a very touching book from the relationship point of view. Paul O’Neill is very gracious to the players and others he liked and doesn’t spend any time dissing anyone. Not your prima donna jock at all. I enjoyed this little book a great deal. It isn’t great literature, but it never made a pretense of trying to either. I mean, this guy has 5, that’s right, 5 world series rings. He is the real deal and seems like a really good guy as well

He would do what it took to help his team win the game. It may have been a clutch hit, a great defensive play, a wise base running decision, or an 11 pitch at-bat to draw a walk. Paul O’Neil played the game the way it is meant to be played.
I like how this book is a dedication to his father, who taught and instilled the values and the mindset on how to play the game of baseball as well as the game of life.
Anybody who grew up in the backyard playing catch with their dad will love this book.
