So the setting is great – I like that it’s really not safe. The only thing that keeps me from rating this higher is the character building. El is instinctively disliked by everyone she meets, and she likewise develops a hard-to-hurt-her-emotionally persona to handle that. The problem is that it’s never explained exactly WHY everyone has this negative reaction to her. And then there’s her complete opposite – Orion. He is beloved by everyone, well except El. But we never get to really know him. Some unexpected things about him are revealed by others, but Orion himself never opens up so we don’t get answers about why he is the way that he is either.

The plot itself moves pretty quickly and I was interested to know what would happen next, but I can’t say I was particularly emotionally involved in it. I will probably read the next in this series just to see where the story goes, especially with that slight cliffhanger-ish ending.
