Malcolm Gladwell writes very interestingly and entertaining I SERVED MY COUNTRY, WHAT DO YOU DO SHIRT. J.R.R. Tolkein also writes very interestingly and entertaining I SERVED MY COUNTRY, WHAT DO YOU DO SHIRT. After reading Tolkein, however, I didn’t venture out into the world to find hobbits, dwarves, and elves as my new friends, or worry about being attacked by trolls. Tolkein’s I SERVED MY COUNTRY, WHAT DO YOU DO SHIRT, while entertaining, have very little to do with reality. Unfortunately, the same can be said of Gladwell. “The Outsider” is a series of well-written and interesting essays along the lines of New Yorker or Vanity Fair articles. However, their connection to reality is very high, very suspicious.
This I SERVED MY COUNTRY, WHAT DO YOU DO SHIRT is a huge disappointment after “The Tipping Point” and “Blink”, both enjoyable I SERVED MY COUNTRY, WHAT DO YOU DO SHIRT that doesn’t leave the reader arguing with the author along the way. One major problem is that there isn’t really a definite thesis in the I SERVED MY COUNTRY, WHAT DO YOU DO SHIRT. Gladwell seems to be saying that the myth of the “self-made” is not true, as every successful person has had help and luck along the way. Well, duh! But then he goes on to say that successful people spend 10,000 hours in their chosen field of success. Do they get any credit for that? Does doing something for 10,000 hours when you can be stupid makes you a bit “self-sufficient”? In my I SERVED MY COUNTRY, WHAT DO YOU DO SHIRT, it definitely has.

Follow Bill Gates. Yes, he comes from a wealthy family that has had a number of breakdowns and some unique opportunities. But what about his old school friends, now meth addicts or bitter failures, who had the same opportunity, but didn’t surround them? Or people who are simply too lazy to spend 10,000 hours in front of a computer? Was Gates “lucky” that he was motivated to do it? So either the main thesis fails – that if you are privileged and lucky, you will succeed, or it becomes something completely trivial, such as “Gates worked hard, but Mr. He’s had some unique vacations.” Again, duh! That is life. Each person can identify the positive and negative aspects of his or her own life. It is the choice to overcome the negatives and capitalize on the positives that make all the difference. If Gates couldn’t find the computer room Gladwell discussed, would he give up or would he keep looking? I think he will keep looking until he finds a similar opportunity. I SERVED MY COUNTRY, WHAT DO YOU DO SHIRT
Science is also incredibly fragile. He asserted – “Successful hockey players are almost all born in January – March”. Well, wouldn’t that apply to all athletes? Didn’t someone before Gladwell figured that out? Where is the data from the NBA, NHL, NFL and MLB? It is really an example of inductive reasoning, not science. Gladwell is known for a pattern with *certain* hockey teams in Canada, and then assumes that this micropattern proves that if you were born in April or later, you won’t become a good athlete. Perhaps so, but Gladwell needs more data to prove his point.
