I could go on a lot longer. El’s constantly irritated narration is absolutely perfect for the story. Orion is a never-ending delight. The worldbuilding is – *checks thesaurus* flamboyant, extravagant, now profligate, in its level of creativity and detail. I cackled the whole way through and now I want the next book yesterday.

Let me take a moment to comment of objections and advisories. This is marketed as an adult book, and there’s a slow but steady stream of four-letter words (hence the R rating) plus some innuendo, but otherwise it could quite easily have been sold as YA. I actually loved El’s abrasive personality, which is of the nature that shows itself hard to the hard-hearted, but gentle to the soft. As to the controversy over racism in the book, Novik apologised for her poor judgement in using locs as an object lesson on the dangers of fantastic monsters…and honestly, are there not FAR worse evidences of systemic racism in the world to worry about?
